Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is a type of physical therapy which utilises water to create a therapeutic environment.

Hydrotherapy is a part of medicine and alternative medicine, in particular with Physiotherapy. The difference between hydrotherapy and swimming or aqua aerobics is that hydrotherapy exercises are tailored by physiotherapists, and the water is much warmer than in a pool.

Hydrotherapy treatment can be progressed until you have reached your full potential. A client may wish to take land-based Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy in combination with one another OR one may choose hydrotherapy to assist with specific movement patterns, reduce spasticity and ease pain prior to progressing to land-based therapy.

At Rehab Basics we offer personalised planned sessions as one to one session or a group session.

Hydrotherapy is a wide-reaching solution suitable for most types of medical conditions including MS, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, cerebral palsy, autism or people rehabilitating after accidents, strokes, surgery or sports accidents.

Some painful and chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia are little understood and therefore have limited treatment options, but patients have found relief through hydrotherapy.

Please Note:

  • Client’s ability to swim is not essential for Hydrotherapy treatment.
  • Client’s head does not need to go under water.
  • Client may remain seated on a chair in the water if need be.
  • Client has to be accompanied with a carer or more than one carer depending on the need of client.

Initial Assessment for Hydrotherapy

All clients have to undergo an Initial Assessment which is carried out by our Specialist Physiotherapists who are trained Hydrotherapists. The Initial Assessment takes place outside the pool. This assessment will establish your goals, treatment plans, physical and function ability, changing at the pool side, access to the pool and health and safety precautions for Hydrotherapy.
