For thousands of people living with stroke, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries, water isn’t just for swimming, it’s becoming one of the most powerful tools in their recovery journey.
The science behind this lies in three simple properties of water: buoyancy, warmth, and pressure. Buoyancy supports a portion of body weight, so a patient who struggles to stand on land can practice standing, stepping or even walking in a pool with far less strain on weak muscles and joints. Warm water, usually kept close to body temperature helps loosen tight and spastic muscles common after stroke or in conditions like multiple sclerosis, making movement smoother and less painful. The gentle pressure of water against the skin also gives the brain extra sensory feedback about where the body is positioned.
This is why hydrotherapy has found a place in rehabilitation to treat a wide range of conditions such as stroke survivors relearning balance, people with Parkinson’s working on steadier steps, individuals with spinal cord injuries strengthening muscles that land-based exercises can’t safely reach and children with cerebral palsy building coordination through play in the water. Water also acts as a built-in safety net. If a patient loses their balance, the water slows the fall, giving them the confidence to attempt movements they’d be too afraid to try on solid ground. Over time, this builds not just physical strength but the courage to keep progressing.
